Fefu And Her Friends
Fefu and Her Friends is an Off-Broadway favourite, winning the writer Maria Irene Fornes one of her six Obie Awards.
With true appreciation of this innovative writing, Director Joh Hartog gives it an equally extraordinary airing at the Bakehouse Theatre. He has decided to use every single one of the rooms at the Bakehouse. You will be guided through the Mainstage Theatre, Studio Theatre, two foyers and even our kitchen, variously representing Fefu’s lounge room, garden, kitchen, bedroom and library. This is the Bakehouse behind the scenes as you have never seen it before! (and probably won't see it again)
Join the tour to watch - “One of the most powerful plays written about the mysteries and shared hallucinations of the female experience” – LA Weekly
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the extraordinary use of different rooms at the Bakehouse, the capacity for this show is 50 only. So you WILL need to book to get a seat!
ABOUT THE SHOW:-
It is around 1935 in South Australia. Women have long since been given the vote and they are allowed to sit in parliament. But it takes more than that to enable women to inhabit an emancipated position in the world.
In Fefu and her Friends eight women meet in Fefu’s house to make final arrangements for a fundraiser about education. They talk about their lives and examine their limited development in a world largely ruled by men.
This sensitive, wise, but above all sparkling and life affirming play portrays a time between the first suffragettes and the fully fledged feminism of the seventies. It gives us eight fairly ordinary, but fascinating women who are all trying to develop an enhanced place in the world for themselves beyond what is regarded as the norm.
Fefu in particular is ready to break some boundaries, but is fearful of the consequences. What is she willing to lose to achieve a change?
Wheelchair users please NOTE: While the main stages are wheelchair accessible, one of the rooms used in this show is NOT. Unfortunately persons in a wheelchair will have their experience compromised.
